International Flooring, Inc. was honored to be contracted by Whiting – Turner for the flooring installation at the Health Central Park Nursing and Rehab Facility for Orlando Health. Originally constructed in 1967, the 218 room facility, the wing of the building was torn down and rebuilt into a 65,000 SF addition, that underwent significant upgrades including the creation of private patient rooms, larger therapy spaces, and peaceful courtyards. There were 70 new private rooms added for rehabilitation patients, and 36 rooms for memory care residents, that required a variety of flooring solutions, including LVT, tile, sheet vinyl, and carpet, with each space needing a distinct approach tailored to its function and aesthetic. The project not only required precision and attention to detail but also the ability to adapt to a dynamic set of challenges.

Challenges and Solutions:
This project presented several unique challenges that required creative solutions:
No Laydown Area
The site lacked a designated laydown area for materials, which could have posed a logistical hurdle. Fortunately, International Flooring, Inc.’s office was just a short three-minute drive away, allowing for quick and easy transport of materials. This proximity allowed efficient and timely deliveries without wasting valuable time.
Staging and Deliveries
The team faced limited storage capacity on site, so they adapted by only bringing enough material for six rooms at a time. Each delivery was carefully staged and organized—every two days, materials were brought in and staged inside according to the specific needs of the upcoming work.
Change Orders and Corner Guards
During the installation, a significant change order was issued regarding the corner guards on the units. The original design did not account for the need to protect raw tile edges, so a Schluter system was implemented to ensure smooth transitions. The corner guards were installed after the wall tiles were laid, requiring careful coordination and additional labor.
Overnight Work and Weekend Transitions
As the project transitioned into the rehab gyms, there were certain periods where overnight work was necessary. The team worked on weekends, adjusting schedules to minimize disruptions to the facility’s daily operations. This flexibility ensured the project progressed without delays while keeping the facility’s functional areas available during the week.
Staffing and Manpower
On a daily basis, 12-13 installers were on-site, handling the various tasks across different areas of the building. When the team tackled the installation of corner guards, the workforce increased to 28 people to ensure the project was kept on schedule. The increased manpower allowed the team to accelerate progress and avoid delays, completing the task efficiently and to a high standard.
